Please note that NEW fonts were added over time (as listed below) and most of the fonts (except 2) have been updated on June 18, 2024, by adding an important feature and few other changes. Future updates will be reported as those happen. Although Udaat and Yakash characters got included into the Unicode Gurmukhi standard may years ago, but font rendering engines did not allow applying Laga-Matra to these characters as those were treated as symbols (for example, like Addak). For this reason I had created my own solution and that continue to be vailable. However, currently the font engines do allow application of Laga-Matra to the Unicode allocated Udaat and Yakash characters. Thus, with the May/June 2024 updates the placement of Aunkarh and Dulankarh to the Unicode allocated Udaat and Yakash was improved. However, as of now Microsoft Office Apps including Microsoft Word do not allow applying Laga-Matra by typing to the Unicode allocated Udaat and Yakash characters. However, Notepad and Open Office do allow this function. It is possible to type such combination in Notepad then copy the typed text and paste into the Word document. Such a pasted text is accepted by Microsoft Office Apps. Many of the fonts in the list below have been available since about year 2001. More fonts have been added subsequently over time. Fonts are often updated over time. One mojor update was on June 17, 2013. Most current update in noted along with description of any font listed below. NOTE: All the fonts listed below support proper display of Gurbani and old Gurmukhi text. |

NOTE: The best way to install the updated fonts is remove the old fonts from the "Fonts" folder inside the "Control Panel" of Microsoft Windows before the installation of the updated fonts. This is particularly true about old fonts (the names of those generally do not start with "Akaash"). And please install Regular fonts before installing Bold fonts. |

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT UNICODE What is Unicode: The Unicode Consortium is a non-profit organization founded to develop, extend and promote use of the Unicode Standard, which specifies the representation of text in modern software products and standards. Unicode is the accepted international standard that includes support for all major scripts of the World and is adopted by all current major computer operating systems. This is a 16 bit standard that allows use of more than 65000 characters in one font. It has support for major Indic (Indian) scripts that include Devanagari (Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit), Bengali (Bengali, Assamese), Gurmukhi (Punjabi), Gujarati, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Microsoft Windows XP/ Vista has full support for Indic scripts, including Gurmukhi. All future development regarding scripts will be based on Unicode. Advantages of Unicode relating to Gurmukhi script: The purpose of this write-up is not to give any detailed information on this topic, but some points are worth mentioning. Migration to Unicode may not be painless as one has to adapt to new ways (but it is not a big deal) and for editing purposes, one has to have a software that has support for Unicode. However, all current computer/smart device operating systems and almost all current software has support for Unicode. There are many advantages in using Unicode text. Documents and web-pages made with Unicode text, when viewed with an appropriate web-browser on a computer with support for Unicode, will always be viewed in the right script even if the font in which web-pages are made is not installed into the system (just as English text is always English, even if the font in which it is made is missing). One can name files and folders in Gurmukhi, search web pages in Gurmukhi, sort text with ease, exchange Gurmukhi data without having to worry about fonts and avoid the hassles of upper-case lower-case and spacing problems that happen when many available non-Unicode Gurmukhi fonts are used. The implementation of Indic scripts by Unicode has been done as per recommendations by the Indian government and it is done in such a way that transliteration (phonetic) between Indic scripts will be easier (compared to if non-standard fonts are used) as code points for corresponding characters are well defined .
